Powering the Next-Generation of AI Smartphone Experiences with MediaTek and vivo
In the age of AI, smartphone experiences are only getting more intelligent and immersive, resulting in growing computing demands on the device. This is why we announced Arm Compute Subsystems (CSS) for Client, offering Armv9 benefits and providing the performance, efficiency and accessibility to deliver leading AI experiences, while making it easier and faster for our partners to build Arm-based silicon solutions.
AI enhances text, image, audio, and video generation, and provides dynamic, immersive gaming. With CSS for Client and the Arm Cortex-X925 CPU, there’s a 46 percent improvement in time-to-first-token, and the Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU boosts AI/ML performance by 36 percent compared to its predecessor. Ecosystem collaborations are what raise the bar for new AI-enabled smartphone experiences that will redefine how we all live, work and play. To ensure we are delivering the best user experiences, earlier this year, vivo and Arm announced a joint lab for future deep technology collaboration. This collaboration brings together vivo’s knowledge of the use cases and features that today’s consumers demand, with Arm’s high-performance and power efficient compute platform, enabling us to deliver these compelling experiences on vivo’s flagship devices.
Speaking of which, vivo’s new X200 series of flagship smartphones is a prime example of a strong ecosystem collaboration, taking advantage of MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9400 system-on-chip (SoC), built on the latest Armv9 technology. With its advanced performance, power-efficiency, and superior AI and multimedia capabilities, the Arm-based Dimensity 9400 SoC is bringing PC-class performance to the next-generation of flagship smartphones.
IPC performance excellence with Arm Cortex-X925
At the core of the Dimensity 9400 is the Cortex-X925, our most powerful Cortex-X CPU to date. The Cortex-X925 delivers a 15 percent uplift in IPC performance over the previous generation, ensuring that the Dimensity 9400 excels at the most demanding tasks. This includes faster AI application responses, smoother AAA gaming experiences, and quicker app operations, all while maintaining optimal power efficiency, with the Dimensity 9400 up to 40 percent more power-efficient than the previous generation.
The big-core Armv9 CPU cluster for all smartphone workloads
Built on TSMC’s cutting-edge N3E process technology, Dimensity 9400 features Armv9.2 CPUs in a big core cluster, consisting of 1x Cortex-X925, 3x Cortex-X4 and 4x Cortex-A720. Dimensity 9400 delivers a 35 percent increase in single-thread performance and 28 percent increase in sustained multi-thread performance over the previous generation. This covers all workloads on the smartphone, from “bursty” workloads, like app start-up, requiring peak performance, to sustained workloads, like gaming and video streaming, that demand a combination of performance and efficiency.
The Armv9 architecture foundation
Central to the Armv9 CPU designs featured in the Dimensity 9400 is the SVE2 architecture feature, which incorporates new specialized vector instructions that are ideal for accelerating key workloads and applications on smartphones. SVE2 accelerates HDR video decode by around 10 percent, allowing users to experience longer battery life while streaming on-demand video on leading applications, while also achieving a performance uplift of 20 percent on algorithms used in computational photography, leading to better quality photos on mobile devices.
Advanced gaming and accelerated AI experiences
On the graphics front, through integrating the Immortalis-G925 GPU, Dimensity 9400 delivers a 41 percent improvement in peak performance, as well as 44 percent power savings compared to the previous generation. This ensures users can enjoy immersive visual experiences and seamless multitasking without compromising battery life, while also providing improved acceleration capabilities for AI use cases, like image classification, natural language processing and speech-to-text.
Immortalis-G925 is also driving the push for improved ray tracing content on mobile, with Dimensity 9400 achieving a 40 percent improvement in ray tracing performance compared to the previous generation. This leads to greater realism and higher-quality gaming experiences on mobile.
Unlocking AI and gaming performance with software
Alongside hardware innovation, Arm, MediaTek and vivo are collaborating extensively to deliver optimal performance through hardware and software co-optimizations. The end-user will experience these enhancements – such as improved web application responsiveness – first-hand through vivo’s X200 series of flagship smartphones.
For gaming, we are working with MediaTek to demonstrate the performance benefits of Arm Accuracy Super Resolution (Arm ASR) – our best-in-class open-source solution for upscaling visual and gaming content on mobile – on Dimensity-based mobile devices. Through switching Arm ASR on, there is a significant uplift in gaming performance on the GPU, which translates into power savings and longer gameplay.
Arm is also focused on working across our software ecosystem to ensure developers unlock the performance needed to create the next wave of stunning AI-powered applications. This is exactly why we introduced Arm Kleidi, which provides developers with frictionless access to the best possible performance on Arm CPUs. We are already demonstrating the value of Kleidi through integrations with the world’s most popular AI frameworks, including PyTorch, MediaPipe and Hunyuan. These integrations are accelerating the performance of leading large language models (LLMs), like Meta’s Llama 3, on Arm-based mobile devices.
Unprecedented ecosystem collaborations
Through a combination of leading-edge technologies, innovative process implementations and software performance optimizations, Arm is supporting our partners to deliver the very best AI-powered solutions for the market as quickly as possible. Working with MediaTek, vivo and our world-leading software ecosystem, we continue to redefine the mobile computing experience.
