For years, mobile game developers have been locked in a battle between visual fidelity and gaming performance. Do you render at higher resolutions and risk lower frame rates? Or do you sacrifice visual quality to reduce thermal throttling and ensure smoother gameplay? But what if you didnā€™t have to choose, and you could have the best of all worlds.

This is exactly what Arm Accuracy Super Resolution (Arm ASR) provides developers, enabling their mobile games to achieve longer, smoother gameplay at a high performance without compromising battery life, all while maintaining high-resolution visuals. At the Game Developer Conference (GDC) 2025, we are delighted to announce that this state-of-the-art solution is now available to all mobile game developers, including a plugin for Unreal Engine and Unity  expected later in the year.

Through Arm ASR, we are pushing mobile gaming performance to a whole new level and making it accessible to all developers and making it accessible to all developers

What is Arm ASR?

Arm Accuracy Super Resolution (Arm ASR) is an upscaling solution developed by Arm to enhance gaming performance without compromising visual quality. By rendering certain stages of a frame at a lower resolution and subsequently upscaling them, Arm ASR reduces GPU workload and power consumption, while enabling complex graphics and lighting effects on mobile devices. This approach ensures that developers can achieve enhanced visuals on mobile games, while maintaining efficient resource usage and mitigating against thermal throttling which can negatively impact the user experience.

To facilitate adoption, Arm ASR is available as an open-source solution under MIT license, inviting developers worldwide to explore and see how it can benefit their games.

Bridging performance and visual fidelity with Arm Accuracy Super Resolution

Arm ASR is built upon AMD’s FidelityFXā„¢ Super Resolution 2 (FSR2), which aims to provide portable solutions to bridge the gap between PC and console gaming. Arm has adapted this technology specifically for mobile platforms, with it featuring highly efficient shaders that reduces both GPU load and bandwidth requirements. This optimization ensures that even devices with limited memory bandwidth can achieve significant performance improvements.

For visuals, Arm Accuracy Super Resolution focuses on temporal upscaling methods, which combines information from multiple frames to produce higher-quality images from lower-resolution inputs, providing developers with familiar API and configuration options. For example, in practical applications, Arm ASR delivers superior results for thinner features, such as tree branches, and edges, ensuring more accurate rendering of fine details.

In benchmark tests using a complex scene rendered on a device equipped with an Arm Immortalis-G720 GPU at a resolution of 2800×1260, Arm ASR demonstrated a 53% increase in frame rates compared to native resolution rendering. This performance boost translates into smoother gameplay and extended battery life, addressing critical goals for mobile gamers.

Arm ASR: The choice of global game engines and game studios

We have also ensured that Arm ASR is compatible with major game engines and a plugin for Unreal Engine 5.3, 5.4, and 5.5 is currently available on Epicā€™s Fab store and a Unity plugin is in development and coming soon.

In the “Mori” demo, Arm ASR was applied to an Unreal Engine 5 project utilizing its innovative desktop renderer for mobile. The results showcased Arm ASR’s ability to preserve fine visual details while improving performance. As seen in the video below, with Arm ASR ON the Unreal Engine plugin leads to improved frames-per-second (FPS) by up to 30% for better performance and power savings, with no noticeable difference in visual quality.

Setting up Arm ASR in Unreal Engine is a streamlined process: game developers only need to enable the Arm ASR plugin, configure project settings to use Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA), and verify the integration via console commandsā€‹. Comprehensive documentation, sample code, and integration guides are available on as an Arm Learning path and tutorial video, ensuring that developers have the necessary resources to implement Arm ASR effectively.

Prominent game studios, including Enduring Games, Infold Games, and Sumo Digital, have integrated Arm ASR into their development processes, leading to improved game performance at the same visual quality.

Pioneering the future of mobile gaming with Arm Accuracy Super Resolution

Arm is committed to continuous innovation in mobile gaming technology. Plans are underway to expand Arm ASRā€™s compatibility with other platforms, ensuring that a broader spectrum of developers can leverage its benefits. Upcoming updates aim to further optimize performance and introduce new features based on community feedback and other technological advancements.

Arm ASR represents a significant advancement in mobile gaming, empowering developers to deliver high performance without compromising visuals. By embracing this open-source technology, developers can create immersive, smooth gaming experiences that their users can enjoy without leading to thermal throttling on mobile devices.

As Arm ASR continues to evolve, it promises to redefine the standards of performance while delivering visual excellence in mobile gaming.

Unlock higher graphics quality and smoother gameplay without battery trade-offs.
