Highlights

  • Rivian debuts its third generation in-house autonomy hardware platform, built on a custom chip developed in close collaboration with Arm.
  • Arm compute platform based on our latest generation Armv9 architecture is integral to a wide range of Rivian’s advanced autonomy capabilities at scale in its future vehicles.

AI is moving into the physical world – into vehicles, robotics and other autonomous machines that must understand their surroundings, make decisions instantly, and act with unwavering reliability. Delivering this safely and at scale requires compute that is powerful, efficient, and rooted in a safety-capable foundation that can be trusted for years. This is the multi trillion-dollar opportunity of physical AI, and Arm is building the compute platform that will power it.

Today, during its Autonomy and AI Day, Rivian, one of the industry’s most forward-leaning, AI-native automakers, introduced its third generation autonomy hardware platform developed entirely in-house, the Rivian Gen 3 Autonomy Computer. At the core of the platform is a new custom autonomy chip, the Rivian Autonomy Processor (RAP1), which leverages the Arm compute platform. It represents a defining milestone in a new era of mobility, where intelligent autonomous machines can navigate dynamic and complex everyday environments with confidence, precision, and safety.

This is physical AI in action: intelligence that doesn’t just analyze the world, but interacts and operates directly within it.

The foundation of Rivian’s Gen 3 Autonomy Computer is the RAP1, a custom chip built in close collaboration with Arm. Built on Armv9, our most advanced architecture, this custom chip gives Rivian a powerful foundation for next-generation autonomy. The Arm Cortex-A720AE CPU, a v9 generational design, helps to power the autonomy experience: interpreting the environment around the vehicle, running the AI models that predict what will happen next, and choosing safe, reliable actions in milliseconds.

In the autonomy platform, safety runs throughout the compute pipeline, with Rivian incorporating Arm processors dedicated to real-time safety functions that keep autonomous systems operating consistently and reliably. This kind of safety-capable compute design is essential for any autonomous machine that is expected to make decisions on the road or in other dynamic environments.

Because Arm’s compute platform delivers high performance at lower power, Rivian can enable advanced autonomy without compromising range or efficiency – an essential advantage as intelligence moves closer to the edge in both vehicles and other autonomous machines. All this gives Rivian not just the capabilities it needs today, but a reliable platform that can scale to future vehicle generations and other applications of physical AI.

Shaping the next chapter of autonomy together

Rivian’s third generation autonomy platform is a clear example of how deeply integrated AI is reshaping what vehicles and machines can do. Intelligence, safety and efficient compute are core to how physical AI operates in the real world. Arm’s compute platform – built on the leading-edge Armv9 architecture – is instrumental in driving this transformation, powering the perception, planning, and control capabilities behind tomorrow’s autonomous systems.

With partners like Rivian, Arm is at the forefront of this shift. As the world moves toward a multi trillion-dollar physical AI economy spanning mobility, robotics, logistics, and industrial automation, Arm is delivering the intelligent, efficient, and safety-capable compute foundation that will enable innovators everywhere to build the autonomous machines of the future.
