What is physical AI and how it is defining the next platform shift?
The next wave of artificial intelligence (AI) is moving into the physical world, embedded into vehicles, robotics, and other autonomous machines. According to McKinsey, AI-powered agents and robots could unlock roughly $2.9 trillion in annual economic value in the United States alone by 2030.
As machines transition from single-task, pre-programmed control devices to adaptive, AI-driven systems, compute performance will be defined by the ability of these systems to:

- Deliver deterministic response times;
- Meet functional safety standards;
- Ensure robust security; and
- Remain reliable over long product lifecycles.

What is physical AI?
Physical AI refers to intelligent systems designed to operate in conditions that are variable, unpredictable and safety critical. These systems can navigate roads, move materials, inspect infrastructure, assemble components, and coordinate fleets – all acting directly in the physical world.
At its core, physical AI is intelligence embodied in the machines, blurring the boundaries between models, software stacks, and the hardware architecture. Continuous streams of sensor data are processed by AI models that generate intent, which control systems execute in real time. The results are then fed back into the system to form a closed perception-action loop.
Physical AI spans autonomous vehicles, advanced robotics, drones, and intelligent industrial systems. What unifies these applications is the compute demands they impose, since they need to coordinate sensing, inference, and control coherently, all while operating within constrained power and safety boundaries.
Generative AI produces digital outputs, such as text, images or code, and typically operates in software environments where performance is measured by model accuracy or creativity. Physical AI, in contrast, operates in dynamic, real-world conditions where real-time decisions translate immediately into motion.
In this context, any errors can impact safety, reliability, and operational continuity, and this reality can shape how physical AI systems are built, validated, and deployed.
Why physical AI represents a platform shift
Physical AI sits at an inflection point similar to the early days of the smartphone. Smartphones became true platforms when computing power, connectivity, and developer ecosystems aligned, with this unlocking entirely new industries and services.
A similar alignment is now happening across vehicles, robotics, and other autonomous machines, as the ecosystem seeks to unlock the multi trillion-dollar physical AI economy. AI algorithms have matured. Sensors and actuators are more accessible. Training infrastructure has expanded.
However, for physical AI to truly scale, it requires a compute foundation that can support and coordinate multiple workloads across cloud training, edge inference, and real-time execution inside machines, while maintaining software continuity across hardware generations.

Physical AI is already being engineered into production autonomy platforms. The Arm compute platform powers much of the intelligence running in vehicles, industrial robots, and edge systems, serving as the compute foundation across many autonomous systems today.
At the core of the Rivian Gen 3 Autonomy computer is its Arm-based Rivian Autonomy Processor (RAP1), which serves as the compute engine behind the platform’s vertically integrated perception, planning, and control stack. Built on Armv9, Rivian can integrate AI inference tightly with vehicle control systems, enable real-time sensor fusion, predictive decision-making, and coordinated drive-by-wire execution across the vehicle architecture.
Similarly, Tensor’s Level 4 agentic AI Robocar platform distributes intelligence across the entire vehicle primarily using the Arm compute platform. Each vehicle integrates more than 400 Arm-based cores spanning Arm Neoverse AE CPUs for high-throughput autonomy workloads, Cortex-X CPU cores for general compute and redundancy, Cortex-R for real-time safety critical control, and Cortex-M for low-power subsystem management.
Both cases highlight the heterogeneous capability of the Arm architecture where perception, planning, control, safety monitoring, and system management work together as a unified system rather than as isolated functions. High-performance AI processing can run alongside deterministic safety systems, while power-efficient cores manage distributed sensing and coordination tasks. This balanced approach allows autonomy stacks to scale in capability without compromising thermal limits, safety integrity, or architectural consistency.
Software adaptability and ecosystem continuity
As Physical AI systems scale beyond prototypes, software adaptability becomes as critical as compute capability. The automotive industry offers a preview of what this looks like in practice. Nearly every major automotive OEM today, including Tesla, Rivian, NIO and Geely, relies on Arm technology as the foundational compute platform, building Arm-powered vehicle applications, like ADAS and immersive in-cabin features, that evolve over years through over-the-air software updates. Robotics and other autonomous machines have similar demands for continuous software upgrades.
For instance, a robot deployed in logistics or manufacturing may operate for a decade, yet its perception models and autonomy policies will change frequently. These ongoing upgrades must happen without destabilizing real-time control domains or forcing full system revalidation with every software release.
Arm’s decades of automotive experience supporting mixed-criticality workloads – where AI, middleware safety-certified must operate side by side – naturally positions it for the next wave of physical AI systems. The same architectural principles used in vehicles can now be applied to robotics and autonomous machines, enabling continuous software updates while preserving behavior and maintaining safety integrity.
The convergence of cloud, edge, and physical AI
AI models are typically trained in large-scale cloud environments, refined through simulation, and then deployed into vehicles, robots, and industrial systems where decisions must be made instantly.
As physical AI systems operate in the real world, data and feedback flow back into the cloud to continuously improve the models. Over time, this creates a continuous loop between training, deployment, and refinement.
As a result, the boundaries between cloud, edge, and physical AI systems are becoming less distinct. Compute can no longer be designed separately for training, inference, and real-time execution. Instead, it must work seamlessly across all environments and remain portable as systems scale and evolve.
The Arm compute platform already spans this entire computing continuum – from cloud-scale servers to edge devices and embedded controllers. This architectural consistency allows developers to build on a common foundation, making it easier to move workloads, reuse software, and scale intelligently.
